Director's Track

Topics offered by Scott Brown -ret. (award winning jazz director, Roosevelt High School, Seattle) include Big Band Workshops and Jazz Clinics to enhance your Jazz Education: learn how to build your program, strengthen public relations, participate in a master class with your band alongside a leading educator, and observe top clinicians working with ensembles.

Foundations for Repertoire Selection and Programming for the High School Jazz Band include strategies for Building a Jazz Culture at your school: festivals, competitions, special events, booster groups, guest artists, commissions, fundraising, travel, and more!

Discover effective techniques for Teaching and ‘Directing’ the high school Jazz Band, helping you develop YOUR unique style.

Signature Salt & Pepper Clinic with a Pro Band

In this signature clinic format, students are seated alongside professional musicians in a dynamic environment that enhances jazz education. The student ensemble performs as the professionals listen intently to their counterparts, followed by real-time feedback from the clinician. During these big band workshops, professional band members then engage directly with students in one-on-one settings to refine technique, style, and interpretation. The student ensemble replays the chart using this guidance, after which the professional band demonstrates the same chart. The clinic culminates in a final combined performance featuring both students and professional musicians.
