Friday evening features a public concert by the distinguished faculty of the Pacific Rim Jazz Workshop. These musicians—active performers, educators, and recording artists—come together in a small-group setting to present an engaging program of jazz standards, contemporary works, and improvisation.
The Faculty Combo Concert offers a relaxed, up-close listening experience, highlighting the musical chemistry and individual artistry of each player. It’s an ideal way for jazz listeners to start the festival weekend.
After two days of rehearsals, clinics, and masterclasses, the participating school jazz bands take the stage to share the music they have been preparing during the workshop.
These performances reflect the students’ growth in ensemble playing, interpretation, and improvisation under the guidance of the workshop clinicians. For audiences, it’s a chance to hear dedicated young musicians bring fresh energy to a range of big band repertoire.
The workshop’s closing concert features the Ira B. Liss Big Band Jazz Machine, a respected large jazz ensemble known for its strong ensemble work, polished sound, and a repertoire that spans classic swing through contemporary big band writing.
This performance offers listeners a well-crafted program showcasing the depth and versatility of a fully professional big band. It’s a fitting conclusion to the Pacific Rim Jazz Workshops, bringing together musicians, students, and the community for an evening of exceptional jazz.
